Bernhard Thomaszewski

Université de Montréal

Dr. Bernhard Thomaszewski is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Montreal. Before joining the University of Montreal, Bernhard was heading the research group on Computational Materials at Disney Research Zurich. After receiving his PhD (2010) and MSc (2005) from the University of Tuebingen (Germany), he was a post-doctoral Researcher at ETH Zurich (Switzerland), where he also held an adjunct lecturer position until 2016.

Bernhard conducts research in computational design for digital fabrication, an emerging field at the intersection of computer graphics, computational mechanics, constraint optimization, material sciences, and human computer interaction. His works capitalizes on computation to create powerful and intuitive design tools for applications as varied as custom mechanisms, physical surfaces, and 3D-printed meta-materials.

As one of the leading graphics researchers in fabrication-oriented design, he has published 19 articles in the field’s most selective and impactful journal ACM Transactions on Graphics, and is named inventor on 10 patents. Bernhard has served repeatedly on all major conference program committees in the field and was most recently programme co-chair of the ACM/Eurographics Symposium on Computer Animation 2017.
