What’s the most natural, nuanced, and expressive way to interact with computational artifacts? Pointing, gazing, clicking, sliding, swiping are all possibilities, as well as many more – but what technique is better, and under what circumstances? Professor Daniel Vogel’s research improves ways in which users interact with devices ranging from large display screens to digital pens to mobile phones, in a subdiscipline of computer science known as human-computer interaction. Beyond numerous publications in the most prestigious venues in this research area, Professor Vogel’s work has achieved tremendous real-world impact – if you’ve selected text on a mobile phone, you’ve likely encountered his work. By combining training in both Fine Arts and Computer Science, Professor Vogel ensures that his designs are not only functional, usable, but also beautiful.
