Position Profile:
The Department of Computer Science, in the Faculty of Science at Western University, is pleased to announce a search for a limited-term (3-year) position to support its Master of Data Analytics (MDA) professional program at the rank of Assistant Professor or Lecturer. The rank and salary will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The starting date will be January 1, 2027 or as negotiated.

This appointment is intended to attract an exceptional and versatile educator with demonstrated expertise spanning both Data Science and Computer Science, and whose contributions to teaching excellence and curriculum development will have a meaningful and lasting impact in this prestigious program.

Academic Expectations:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach the equivalent of three full course equivalents (FCEs) per academic year. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate courses in Data Science and Computer Science within the MDA program, as well as more traditional undergraduate and graduate programs in Computer Science.  Given the structure of the MDA program, there is an expectation that the successful applicant will be called upon to teach in the summer academic term.

In addition to teaching, the appointee will contribute service to the Department’s undergraduate and graduate programs and play an active role in the ongoing development and delivery of the MDA program. Service activities may include, but are not limited to, student recruitment initiatives, periodic curriculum review, program development, and other departmental service roles as appropriate.

Qualifications or Experience and Skills Required:
The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline or a Master’s in such a discipline with commensurate/equivalent relevant industrial experience or accreditation.  The candidate must also demonstrate:

·         Substantial teaching experience and/or potential

·         The ability to teach Data Science and/or Computer Science courses (particularly those related to or in support of Data Science) at the postsecondary level

·         The ability to deliver courses to both undergraduate and graduate students

·         The ability to develop innovative new courses and contribute to innovative curriculum development efforts

·         Relevant industrial experience, engagement in industrial or professional activities or duties, and/or the ability to connect educational experiences to industrial practice

·         Evidence of and/or potential for meaningful contributions to departmental, faculty, and university service and administration

Please note that degree requirement qualifications will be considered at the start date of the appointment, not at the time of application, so in-progress degrees are acceptable provided they are completed in time.

Excellence in teaching and performance can be evidenced by, but not limited to:

·         Innovative course, curriculum, or laboratory design and evaluation (as exemplified through course syllabi, curriculum documents, instructional or laboratory materials, assessments, and so on)

·         Teaching awards and nominations

·         Outstanding teaching evaluations

·         Support letters from students

·         Publications related to course and curriculum development or delivery

·         Training or certification in pedagogy or teaching at the university level

Compensation Details: Salary Range $125,000 to $155,000

The Department of Computer Science:
Established in 1964, the Department of Computer Science at Western has developed strong academic and research programs to become one of the leading establishments in its field. Our faculty are the recipients of many teaching and research awards, with strengths in the Department including algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, bioinformatics, computational neuroscience, distributed systems, software engineering and theoretical computer science.
