Papers and Posters

Les appel à communications describes the two paper tracks, the poster track, and their requirements. All papers and posters submitted to CACE must be original work that complies with the ACM authorship policy.

Papers

Please ensure that you submit your paper to the correct paper track by reading the appel à communications et le Reviewing Guidelines. Papers will be reviewed for the track they are submitted to and will not be moved between tracks. Any submissions made to both tracks will be desk rejected from both tracks.

Computing Education Research Papers are limited to a maximum of 8 pages of body content. Computing Education Practice Papers are limited to a maximum of 6 pages of body content. If included, appendix materials must fit within the 6/8 page limit.

For both paper tracks, one additional page may be included, which contains only references.

Note that an abstract submission is mandatory for all papers and is due a week before the deadline for the final paper submission.

All papers must have a plain-text abstract of up to 250 words. The abstract should be submitted in EasyChair along with paper metadata, and the same text should be included in the PDF version of the full paper at the appropriate location. The abstract helps reviewers bid for papers that they are qualified to review and interested in reviewing. To help the bidding and reviewing process, please submit an abstract that you believe will best describe the finished paper.

Affiches

Poster submissions consist of a two-page extended abstract, including references, that describes the motivation for the work, its current status, and its potential application or contribution to the field. Submissions should be grounded in relevant literature where appropriate and communicate the significance or practical value of the work.

Accepted submissions will be published in the conference proceedings and presented in-person during the conference poster session. Authors are responsible for preparing and bringing a printed poster for display. Student submissions are particularly welcome, and this track provides an excellent venue for undergraduate and graduate students to meet and connect with members of the community.

Requirements for all submissions

Authors are responsible for complying with all conference policies. If you have questions about any of these policies, please contact cace-pcs@cscan-infocan.ca for clarification prior to submission.

For any study involving human participants or their data, the submission should describe the relevant ethics approval, including the approving authority (anonymized for review where necessary) and the data or activities covered. If any human participant data fall outside approved ethics protocols, the authors should clearly justify this and explain why approval was not obtained.

ACM has made a commitment to collect ORCiD IDs from all published authors (ORCiD FAQs). All authors on each submission must have an ORCiD ID in order to complete the submission process. Please make sure to get your ORCiD ID in advance of submitting your work.

Submission Instructions

All submissions must be in English and formatted using the 2-column ACM SIG Conference Proceedings format and US letter size pages (8.5x11 inch or 215.9 x 279.4mm). You must NOT alter any of the templates (e.g., regarding font size, margins, etc.)

If the submission includes figures and tables, the text in them must be readable at 100% magnification and in greyscale. Figures and tables must be readable in a printed version of the paper.

For the review version of the submission, authors should leave enough space for information that will be added later, such as author names, affiliations, and the ACM reference block. This can be done by using placeholders or by keeping the manuscript below the page limit. Submissions that use the full page allocation without reserving space for these required elements will be rejected for exceeding the page limit.

All submissions must address at least two computing education topics from this list. Submissions deemed outside the scope of the CACE conference will be desk rejected without review.

Author lists

Author lists cannot be changed after an initial submission. Please consult with co-authors prior to submission to determine the author list and order. Authors cannot be added, removed, or re-ordered.

References

Ensure that references are formatted correctly in ACM format and include DOIs.

Desk Rejects

Submissions that do not adhere to page limits or formatting requirements or are outside the scope of the conference will be desk rejected without review.

Links to Supplementary Information

Submissions are expected to stand alone. For this reason, anonymized submissions should not include active links to supplementary material, such as a demonstration of software being introduced. If the submission is accepted for the conference and for publication, authors will be asked to complete a camera-ready copy that may, if appropriate, include links to supplementary information.

Submission Templates

MS Word Authors: Please use the interim Word template provided by ACM.

LaTeX Authors:

• Overleaf provides a suitable two-column sig conference proceedings template.
• Other LaTeX users may alternatively use the ACM Primary template, adding the “sigconf” format option in the documentclass to obtain the 2-column format.

Double Anonymized Review

Authors must submit ONLY an anonymized submission. Submissions are reviewed with a dual-anonymous review process. Reviewers do not know the authors’ identities and authors do not know the reviewers’ identities.

Self-citations are allowed if they are worded so that the reviewer doesn’t know if the author is citing themself or someone else. For example, instead of writing “in our prior work [1] …” you may write “Author1 and Author 2 conducted a related study [1] …”.

As per ACM guidelines, authors may distribute a preprint of their work on ArXiv.org. However, to ensure the anonymity of the reviewing process, please do not publish your work until after you receive the accept/reject notice.

ACM Open

We intend to publish all CACE 2027 papers with ACM Open.

Starting January 1, 2026, ACM fully transitioned to Open Access. All ACM publications will be 100% Open Access. Authors will have two primary options for publishing Open Access articles with ACM: the ACM Open institutional model or by paying Article Processing Charges (APCs). With ~3000 institutions already part of ACM Open, the majority of ACM-sponsored conference papers will not require APCs from authors or conferences (currently, around 70-75%).

Authors from institutions not participating in ACM Open will need to pay an APC to publish their papers, unless they qualify for a financial or discretionary waiver. To find out whether an APC applies to your article, please consult the list of participating institutions in ACM Open and review the APC Waivers and Discounts Policy. Keep in mind that waivers are rare and are granted based on specific criteria set by ACM.

Registration and attendance policy

At least one author of an accepted submission must register for and attend the conference. Authors are expected to present in person. A small number of remote presentations may be possible from authors unable to attend in person for structural reasons. As a Canadian conference, priority for scarce remote presentation opportunities may be given to authors from Canadian institutions, particularly from remote regions of Canada.

Conflict of Interest Policy

The CACE Program Chairs and the Submissions and Publications Chairs may not submit to the conference. Track chairs may not submit to the track that they are co-chairing. Program committee members’ students and collaborators may submit to the conference. Program committee members will recuse themselves from decision making on conflicted submissions.

Reviewers and authors will be asked to state their conflicts of interest and these conflicts will be avoided when assigning reviewers to papers.

Reviewing Policy

Reviewers will follow the ACM Peer Review policy.

Some key excerpts from the policy include:

• the quality and integrity of the peer review process requires that the reviewer be a qualified expert in the subject matter of the submission, that reviewers carefully read submissions prior to completing their review, that the reviewer takes responsibility for the complete contents of their review and is the sole author of that review, that the reviewer agrees to keep the contents of the submission and their review confidential
• submissions may not be disclosed outside authorized reviewers… [t]his includes the uploading of confidential submissions, technical approaches described by authors in their submissions, or any information about the authors into any system managed by a third party, including LLMs, that does not promise to maintain the confidentiality of that information

Paper and Poster Reviewing

All paper and poster submissions will be reviewed with a dual-anonymous process. Reviewers do not know the authors’ identities and authors do not know the reviewers’ identities. We expect each submission to receive three reviews.

Reviewers will have at least three weeks plus a day to complete their reviews.

There is no rebuttal period and no opportunity to resubmit a revision for further review.

Review criteria

Computing Education Research Papers will be reviewed based on the clarity and significance of the research question(s) or theoretical contribution, alignment with prior literature and theory, methodological soundness and transparency, overall contribution, and written expression.

Computing Education Practice Papers will be reviewed based on relevance to the CACE community, grounding in prior literature, novelty, clarity, depth of reflection, impact, and written expression.
