The Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time, tenure stream faculty position in User Experience Design (UXD) or Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at the rank of Associate Professor. The appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2023.

We seek an established scholar whose research interests are in areas such as user interface design and evaluation methods, information visualization, sustainability, accessibility, theoretical foundations of HCI, design of systems and practices to access, share, and manage knowledge, information retrieval and universal design. Industrial experience in a related area will be a strong asset. We are especially interested in exceptional candidates who transcend traditional research topics and who complement our Faculty’s existing strengths.

Applicants must have a PhD in Information, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience Design (UXD), or a related field, with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research, teaching, and undergraduate/graduate mentorship. The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and experience working across faculties/departments and disciplines. The successful candidate will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated primarily by high impact publications in leading journals or conferences in the field, the submitted research statement, presentations and keynotes at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements by referees. We also welcome non-traditional demonstrations of research impact, including for example patents and significant creative professional activities. Research excellence will be evaluated commensurate with the career stage of the candidate, taking into consideration the life, trajectory and any special circumstances (e.g., career interruptions) as outlined in the submitted materials.

Applicants must also provide evidence of excellence in teaching, supervising, and mentoring students, and the demonstrated ability and ambition to advance our Faculty’s rigorous, highly-ranked Master of Information, Bachelor of Information, and PhD programs.  The successful candidate will be expected to undertake undergraduate and graduate research supervision and teaching, and to perform professional and administrative activities typical of a research-intensive university-level department.
