Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Computer Science – Fighting inequities

The School of Computer Science of McGill University, Montreal, invites applications for a tenure-track appointment (all ranks). This position forms part of a larger strategic hiring initiative, both within the Faculty of Science and McGill University at large, which seeks to increase the representation of Black faculty and to support their success, in line with the University’s commitments set out in its Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism. Among candidates deemed to equivalently meet the requirements of this position, preference will be given to Black candidates.

Examples of areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Data Science and Data Mining
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
  • Fairness and Responsible AI
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Software Engineering
  • Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics
  • Education
  • Health informatics / bioinformatics
  • Other areas of computer science that can address inequities

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in computer science approaches in relation to racial, ethnic, cultural, or other types of social inequities. Examples include:

  • Data science techniques applicable to the detection, monitoring, or study of the presence or consequences of discrimination.
  • (Un)fairness and (in)justice in the design and implementation of artificial intelligence and algorithmic systems, with potential applications toward reducing inequities.
  • Development of accountable, transparent, and ethical computer systems from critical human-computer interaction and software engineering perspectives.

This recruitment is consistent with McGill’s efforts to carry out range of academic searches and appointments across disciplines and Faculties, including the Faculty of Science, focused on increasing the representation of Black excellence at McGill. Over the last two years, McGill appointed 28 Black tenure-track or tenured faculty at various ranks. Salary will be negotiable, according to qualifications and experience. Outstanding candidates with specialization related to machine learning may be nominated to become affiliated to Mila (Quebec AI Institute) and/or recommended to receive a Canada CIFAR AI Chair, subject to availability.

The expected start date is August 1, 2023.
