Les principales contributions du Dr Ma couvrent deux domaines importants de la bio-informatique : la spectrom\u00e9trie de masse computationnelle et la recherche d'homologie de s\u00e9quence. Ses contributions dans ces deux domaines ont eu un impact majeur sur le terrain, en fournissant des approches innovantes aux informaticiens pour faire face aux probl\u00e8mes biologiques et en \u00e9quipant les biologistes de nouveaux outils pour analyser leurs donn\u00e9es dans des centaines de laboratoires de recherche dans le monde entier.<\/p>\n<p>La spectrom\u00e9trie de masse computationnelle est un domaine relativement nouveau, mais extr\u00eamement influent de la bio-informatique. Les m\u00e9thodes informatiques d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es dans ce domaine ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00e9tablissement de la prot\u00e9omique moderne, un sujet qui \u00e9tudie toutes les prot\u00e9ines\/peptides existant dans un tissu biologique \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9. L'\u00e9tude de la prot\u00e9omique a d\u00e9j\u00e0 conduit \u00e0 la mise au point de nouveaux m\u00e9dicaments et traitements pour des maladies humaines majeures telles que le cancer. Le Dr Ma a apport\u00e9 une contribution majeure dans ce domaine en d\u00e9veloppant le logiciel industriel standard de \"s\u00e9quen\u00e7age de novo\" (PEAKS) pour l'identification de nouveaux peptides \u00e0 partir de donn\u00e9es de spectrom\u00e9trie de masse. Bas\u00e9 sur un algorithme innovant, son programme a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier logiciel de \"s\u00e9quen\u00e7age de novo\" largement utilis\u00e9 dans les laboratoires de spectrom\u00e9trie de masse. C'est aujourd'hui le logiciel de \"s\u00e9quen\u00e7age de novo\" le plus utilis\u00e9, et il est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme le meilleur par la communaut\u00e9 des utilisateurs.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s l'adoption \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle de son outil de s\u00e9quen\u00e7age de novo, le Dr Ma a \u00e9galement travaill\u00e9 sur d'autres outils logiciels analytiques pour aider les biochimistes et les chercheurs en sant\u00e9 \u00e0 quantifier et \u00e0 caract\u00e9riser les prot\u00e9ines et les modifications post-traductionnelles \u00e0 l'aide de la spectrom\u00e9trie de masse. Les prot\u00e9ines et les modifications anormales \u00e9tant directement li\u00e9es \u00e0 la maladie, ces outils sont d'une grande importance pour la recherche de biomarqueurs prot\u00e9iques et pour la compr\u00e9hension de certaines voies pathologiques importantes.<\/p>\n<p>Dans le domaine de la recherche d'homologie de s\u00e9quences, les scientifiques souhaitent trouver toutes les s\u00e9quences d'ADN d'une grande base de donn\u00e9es qui sont similaires \u00e0 une s\u00e9quence donn\u00e9e, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 que ces s\u00e9quences similaires sont susceptibles d'avoir des fonctions similaires \u00e0 celle de la s\u00e9quence donn\u00e9e. Il s'agit d'un probl\u00e8me central en bio-informatique qui a des applications dans presque tous les autres domaines de recherche en bio-informatique. Le Dr Ma a propos\u00e9 la \"m\u00e9thode des graines espac\u00e9es\" pour un filtrage plus efficace dans la recherche de similitudes. Cette m\u00e9thode a rapidement remplac\u00e9 la m\u00e9thode des graines cons\u00e9cutives qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9e dans ce domaine pendant deux d\u00e9cennies, et s'est maintenant impos\u00e9e comme la m\u00e9thode standard pour tous les nouveaux logiciels de recherche d'homologie. R\u00e9cemment, la m\u00e9thode des graines espac\u00e9es a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 largement utilis\u00e9e dans l'analyse de la prochaine g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de donn\u00e9es de s\u00e9quen\u00e7age de l'ADN.<\/p>\n<p>Dans l'ensemble, les recherches du Dr Ma en bioinformatique ont permis d'am\u00e9liorer consid\u00e9rablement les solutions pratiques.
