Ming Li a obtenu son doctorat \u00e0 l'universit\u00e9 Cornell en 1985, suivi d'une bourse postdoctorale \u00e0 Harvard. Professeur \u00e0 l'universit\u00e9 de Waterloo, il a re\u00e7u le prix Killam en 2010 pour ses contributions \u00e0 l'informatique.<\/p><p>Nous vivons dans une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de l'information. Qu'est-ce que l'information ? Existe-t-il une th\u00e9orie qui r\u00e9git les entit\u00e9s porteuses d'information, semblable \u00e0 celle de la m\u00e9canique newtonienne pour le monde classique ? La r\u00e9ponse est la complexit\u00e9 de Kolmogorov. La complexit\u00e9 de Kolmogorov fournit une mesure universelle de l'information, du contenu de l'information et du caract\u00e8re al\u00e9atoire. Li et ses coll\u00e8gues ont \u00e9tendu la complexit\u00e9 de Kolmogorov \u00e0 deux s\u00e9quences qui conduisent \u00e0 une mesure universelle de la distance d'information. Ils ont \u00e9galement reli\u00e9 l'information \u00e0 la thermodynamique et calcul\u00e9 le co\u00fbt thermodynamique ultime de la cr\u00e9ation ou de l'effacement d'une s\u00e9quence. Cela a en fait conduit \u00e0 l'apprentissage sans coup f\u00e9rir. Dans un article de SIGKDD04 (pp. 206-215), Keogh, Lonardi et Ratanamahatana ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que la m\u00e9thode de distance d'information sans param\u00e8tre de Li \u00e9tait meilleure que l'ensemble des 51 m\u00e9thodes de regroupement de s\u00e9ries temporelles trouv\u00e9es dans les sept principales conf\u00e9rences d'exploration de donn\u00e9es. Plus de 1 000 articles ont appliqu\u00e9 la m\u00e9thode de Li \u00e0 la classification des langues, aux questions-r\u00e9ponses, \u00e0 l'identification des lign\u00e9es cellulaires canc\u00e9reuses, \u00e0 la classification musicale, \u00e0 la phylog\u00e9nie, \u00e0 la d\u00e9tection des anomalies, \u00e0 la mesure et \u00e0 l'obscurcissement des logiciels, \u00e0 la d\u00e9tection des logiciels malveillants, \u00e0 l'occupation des nucl\u00e9osomes, \u00e0 la classification des s\u00e9quences\/structures de prot\u00e9ines, au suivi du rythme cardiaque f\u0153tal, \u00e0 l'analyse COVID-19, \u00e0 l'apprentissage profond, et \u00e0 bien d'autres choses encore.<\/p><p>L'analyse des cas attendus des algorithmes est un d\u00e9fi majeur en informatique, car il faut faire la moyenne de toutes les entr\u00e9es possibles. Une cha\u00eene al\u00e9atoire de Kolmogorov est la cl\u00e9 de ce probl\u00e8me. Il s'av\u00e8re que si l'on analyse un algorithme sur une entr\u00e9e al\u00e9atoire typique de Kolmogorov, on obtient automatiquement le cas moyen sur toutes les entr\u00e9es. Li et ses coll\u00e8gues ont utilis\u00e9 cette m\u00e9thode pour r\u00e9soudre de nombreuses questions ouvertes en informatique th\u00e9orique.<\/p><p>L'histoire compl\u00e8te et la th\u00e9orie de la complexit\u00e9 de Kolmogorov, ainsi que ces travaux et de nombreuses applications ont \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9sum\u00e9s dans le livre de Li et Vit\u00e1nyi intitul\u00e9 \"An Introduction to Kolmogorov Complexity and its Applications\" (Introduction \u00e0 la complexit\u00e9 de Kolmogorov et \u00e0 ses applications). Ce livre est consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un classique de l'informatique et est tr\u00e8s lu. Il a remport\u00e9 le McGuffey Longevity Award en 2020.<\/p><p>Li a travaill\u00e9 dans de nombreux autres domaines scientifiques, y compris ses contributions pionni\u00e8res au domaine de la biologie informatique. Il a notamment apport\u00e9 des contributions substantielles au domaine de la bioinformatique. Actuellement tr\u00e8s pertinents, certains de ses travaux r\u00e9cents sont li\u00e9s au s\u00e9quen\u00e7age de l'anticorps neutralisant COVID-19. Les s\u00e9quences d'ADN ont des m\u00e9canismes d'appariement ; on peut donc utiliser la PCR pour les s\u00e9quencer, comme dans les tests de l'ARN COVID-19. Les s\u00e9quences de prot\u00e9ines, en revanche, ne peuvent pas \u00eatre s\u00e9quenc\u00e9es par PCR. En 2016, Li et son \u00e9quipe ont publi\u00e9 le premier protocole complet de s\u00e9quen\u00e7age d'un anticorps monoclonal complet dans Nature Scientific Report. Ils ont ensuite am\u00e9lior\u00e9 le processus dans PNAS'2017, Nature Methods'2019, puis dans Nature Machine Intelligence 2021 (accept\u00e9). Ces recherches intensives ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 une industrie du s\u00e9quen\u00e7age d'anticorps. Pendant la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19, l'\u00e9quipe de Li a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 traiter et \u00e0 analyser de nombreuses s\u00e9quences d'anticorps.<\/p><p>Li a re\u00e7u la prestigieuse bourse comm\u00e9morative E.W.R. Steacie du CRSNG et la bourse de recherche Killam. Il est titulaire d'une chaire de recherche du Canada de niveau I en bioinformatique et est membre de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 royale du Canada, de l'ACM et de l'IEEE.
