Université de Montréal

In the context of the interdisciplinary project “Validation of bloom event prediction by satellite image analysis – toxin”, we seek an outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow to work on the software engineering component of the project.

* PROJECT DESCRIPTION *
The project is a collaboration between the department of computer science and operations research (DIRO) and the chemistry department of the University of Montreal, together with multiple industrial stakeholders, mainly Watershed Monitoring, who is leading this project. The project is funded by Genome Canada together with other sources. This project aims to deliver a product that will efficiently enhance the detection of potential toxin occurrence following the forecasting of specific favorable conditions for cyanobacterial bloom events in Canadian lakes. Climate change and human activities are increasing the pressure on our water resources, challenging the preservation of water quality. Cyanobacterial blooms are a well-known problem that affects water quality and prevents the use of water for any usage. Swimming and the practice of sports in these waters can pose a health risk to the population.

* QUALIFICATIONS *
We are looking for a candidate who will lead the development of a validation model that aggregates data from multiple sources: the interoperability between climate forecasting, satellite imagery analysis from small lakes, and the genomic data sampled from them. The candidate should have strong expertise in (1) software engineering and model-driven engineering and a good knowledge of (2) reinforcement learning techniques. The candidate will be working closely with graduate students in computer science, chemistry, and employees of the partner companies.

* POSITION *
The position should be filled by January 1st, 2023, and runs for 3 years. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team at the University of Montreal, a world-class university in software engineering and machine learning. The candidate must be present in Montreal, Canada during the project. The position comes with a highly competitive salary and social benefits.

* APPLICATION *
Candidates should send their complete application to Prof. Eugene Syriani at syriani@iro.umontreal.ca, including a cover letter, CV, list of publications, 2 reference letters. You can contact Prof. Syriani for informal inquiries.
